How long should you wait to take a hospital pregnancy test after having unprotected ***?

I last had unprotected *** on the 14th and 15th this month. My period is usually due the 16th, morning of the 17th at the latest; however, it was not until this morning that I had any signs of bleeding. Even then…I usually have abnormally heavy bleeding and I hardly have any blood right now. I was in the ER this morning and they got a urine sample and did a pregnancy test which came out negative. Is it too early for them to tell??
